Description: Brightly painted papier mâché Athi Varthar Swamy, a form of Vishnu. The idol of Athi Varathar Swamy lies under water in the temple tank at the Varadraja Perumal temple in Kancheepuram. Once every 40 years the idol is brought out for 48 days for devotees to see and pay respects to. The idol is displayed reclining for the first 24 days and then standing for the next 24 days, when it is placed for devotees to see.
